President George W. Bush has approved funding for two brand new college grants named the National Smart Grant and Academic Competitiveness Grant. Over $ 700 million dollars is set aside specifically for these two grants. The whole purpose behind the college grants is to encourage students to work towards a career in the science, mathematics, and technology fields. Both grants grants have gone into effect this year. Each grant has their own requirements to become eligible. The items discussed below explain the main requirements. Students should keep in mind that they may need to meet more requirements before receiving grant money.
The Academic Competitiveness Grant is awarded only to first and second year college students. Freshman students are eligible to be awarded as much as $ 750 toward tuition expenses and second year students may be awarded up to $ 1300. Students could be eligible to receive the Academic Competitiveness Grant if:
They are registered as a first or second year full-time college student in a 2-4 year degree program.
They’re qualified to receive the Pell Grant. (Students who are awarded the Academic Competitiveness Grant can also apply the Pell Grant to help with their tuition for college.).
They have completed a rigid plan of study in high school as described by the national education requirements and standards.
They maintained at least a 3.0 grade point during the first year. (For sophomores)
They’re currently a citizen of the United States.
They completed senior high school following January 1, 2006 for freshmen and January 1, 2005 for sophomores.
The National Smart Grant is an award given to junior and senior year college students. Junior and senior students may be eligible to receive as much as $ 4000. Below we have listed the current eligibility requirements for the National Smart Grant.
College students may be eligible to receive the National Smart Grant if:
They are currently registered as a full time junior or senior student in a four-year program.
They are eligible to receive a Pell Grant. (Students who receive the National Smart Grant may also get the Pell Grant to go towards tuition.).
They are a U.S. citizen.
They have earned at least a 3.0 grade point.
They have declared to graduate with a degree in technology, engineering, math, science, or a critical foreign language.
For college students who do not meet the criteria for the National Smart Grant or the Academic Competitiveness Grant, there are several other college government grants available. The requirements dependent upon the student grant. Students are eligible to obtain a college grant depending on athletic ability, academic achievement, or financial need. Explore a bunch of programs for grants to obtain college grants you may be eligible for. Fill out applications for a variety of grants. Start the application at the beginning of the year. Complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Earn and maintain a B cumulative grade point average.
